Haiku Bindii

The 1 August meeting of the Bindii Japanese Genre Poetry Group was held at the Box Factory, Adelaide, from 12 noon to 2 pm. Eight members attended and there were three apologies. General Business: 1.      Patricia Prime has posted a review of Willow Light on the HaikuOz website. 2.     Bindii Japanese Genre Poetry Group has sponsored prizes for haiku written by schoolchildren for the Langhorne Creek young people’s writing competition . 3.     Program for the remainder of 2015: Saturday 3 October: a ginko (haiku walk) in Himeji Gardens led by Lee Bentley. We will meet at the Box Factory at 12 noon and then walk to the gardens (5 mins walk). The hoped for outcome might include a group of associated haiku that we could publish. If the weather is inclement, we will hold the whole meeting at the Box Factory. Nine members and guests met at the Box Factory at 12 noon for Karin Anderson’s talk on early love tanka, from as far back as ninth century Ise Monogatari. Karin then discussed kyoka, the humorous equivalent of the tanka form, also with examples. Some examples were modern compositions published on the Prune Juice website. https://prunejuice.wordpress.com/ Karin also prepared an informative handout for members.  Our thanks to Karin for her well researched and well delivered presentation. Lyn Arden presented some material on the early forms of katauta, sedoka and mondo, also with examples from current literature. After the presentation, group members workshopped their Japanese genre poetry, mainly haiku and tanka. Bindii Japanese Genre Poetry Group members and others interested are invited to attend our June meeting to share our love of poetry and workshop our own work. MEETING VENUE: The Box Factory, 59 Regent St South, Adelaide. DATE: 6 June TIME: 12:00 - 2 pm PRESENTATION: Karin Anderson will give a short workshop on early and more unusual Japanese poetry genres, which was postponed from the April meeting. Members are encouraged to bring in examples of the more unusual forms for sharing and discussion (sedoka, kyoka other forms). WORKSHOP OF MEMBERS WORK: will follow the presentation.

Our next meeting will be held on Saturday 11 April at the Box Factory, 59 Regent St South, Adelaide. PLEASE NOTE OUR USUAL DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO A WEEK LATER BECAUSE OF EASTER FALLING ON THE FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH. Karin Anderson will present a workshop on:   'Classical Japanese love poetry.   She will also talk about the rules of kyoka,   including examples from Prune Juice and kyoka written after viewing a 1790 Japanese picture.' Prune Juice Journal of Senryu and Kyoka Members are invited to bring examples of their own work for discussion and workshop.

Our February meeting, chaired by Lee Bentley, concentrated on organizational details for the launch of our new anthology: Haiku Bindii: Willow Light.  The anthology will be launched on Saturday 25 April 2015 at the Box Factory Community Centre. The anthology will contain haiku, tanka, haibun and haiga by Bindii group members.  An afternoon launch is planned, from 2 pm. An invitation will be circulated and placed on our website. Further details for the launch will be discussed at the next meeting on 11 April. GENERAL WORKSHOP: Members shared their tanka, haiku and haibun for workshop. Lee Bentley has invited members to send her their offers of workshops for the 2015 Bindii program.
