Haiku Bindii

Our follow up haibun workshop presented by Maeve Archibald was an opportunity to share the haibun written from the prompts provided at our August workshop. Six members attended and read work on a variety of subjects that had stimulated their imagination. Helpful critique and suggestions followed each reading. As a further follow up, Lee Bentley, liaising with Maeve, will intermittently email some writing stimulus ideas to members. It is hoped that this will provide some continuity between our bimonthly meetings. Members are requested to think about the kind of program they would like in 2018 so this can be discussed further at the next meeting. Lee will provide a separate report on the Bindii sponsored Langhorne Creek Haiku Competition for schools. Lee has just finished judging the entries for this year’s competition. The report will be posted as a separate item.

The October meeting, led by Maeve Archibald, will concentrate on haibun, and will be the second instalment of her two haibun workshops. Maeve distributed a writing exercise to members and the resultant haibun will be workshopped at the October meeting. The meeting starts at 12.30 and finishes at 2.30 pm on Saturday 7 October. On a very cold, windy day, with a threatening storm we were pleased to welcome seven members for the haibun workshop presented by Maeve Archibald at the Box Factory, 59 Regent St South, Adelaide. The workshop commenced at 12.30. Maeve Archibald presented a detailed workshop, starting with an exploration of the varieties of haibun being written and then suggesting various ways of approaching the construction of a haibun. Ten members of the Bindii group attended a tanka workshop led by Dawn Colsey and Lynette Arden at the Box Factory, 59 Regent St South, Adelaide. Lee Bentley, as chair of the meeting, welcomed the presenters at 12.30. Some written material had been distributed to members by email prior the meeting and links to further articles are displayed on Bindii Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/1150474291637982/ Several members brought in a range of journals and books containing tanka, so all could share a range of published work. The workshop started with some thoughts on tanka styles discussed by Dawn and Lynette, with examples from both Japanese and English language writers. Members were then invited to select a favourite tanka, from the journals that had been distributed, and write it on the whiteboard for discussion.

On a beautiful autumn day, seven members of the Bindii Japanese Genre Poetry Group met for a ginko in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. Adelaide Botanic Gardens We gathered at the Simpson Kiosk near the Main Lake at 11 am. The morning had a real taste of the coolness of autumn, and members remarked on the number of magpies they had seen while getting to the meeting place. Our ginko leader for the day was Lee Bentley and other members present were:   Lynette Arden, Margaret Fensom, Belinda Broughton, Ervin Janek, Dawn Colsey and Maeve Archibald. After a brief orientation by Lee, we spent the next hour wandering individually to different spots in these magnificent gardens, taking notes, jotting down haiku and tanka and taking photos of any features that seemed of significance.
